A major airport rave from the point where the national hardcore circuit and the rapidly sharpening jungle scene were still sharing the same night.
Lydd 5.2.94 at a glance
The surviving flyer places the event in Lydd International Airport’s main hangar and warehouse, near Ashford in Kent, running through the night from 8pm to 8am.
Broad rave meeting jungle
February 1994 is useful precisely because the later genre boundaries are not yet clean.
The airport setting belongs to the large-scale rave tradition, but the surviving recordings are dominated by selectors and MCs who were central to the breakbeat and jungle direction becoming more defined through 1994.
Six Rave Archive UK recordings give the night unusual depth: Food Junkie, Slipmatt with MC GQ, Ellis Dee with MC GQ, Micky Finn with MC GQ, DJ Hype with MC GQ and Kenny Ken with MC GQ.
That surviving group does not represent a reconstructed full running order. It is the part of the event that remains audible in this archive — and it is enough to show how quickly the sound was changing inside a promoter format still rooted in the broad rave circuit.
What Lydd sounded like in February ’94
The tapes are more useful than a retrospective genre label because they preserve the actual records moving through the room.
Reconstructed tracklists for Hype & MC GQ and Slipmatt & MC GQ overlap around records such as Q Project’s Champion Sound and Jo’s R-Type, but then pull in different directions.
Hype’s surviving set moves through Deep Blue, Origin Unknown, Roni Size & DJ Die, Omni Trio and DJ Rap & Aston. Slipmatt’s recording carries Tayla, Nookie, DJ Seduction, Danny Breaks and his own Breaking Free.
In one airport hangar you can therefore hear hardcore, breakbeat and the rapidly sharpening jungle sound rubbing shoulders before later histories separated them into tidier boxes.
