One Nation The Valentines Ball

One Nation’s first documented Roller Express rave, Under A Groove, had taken place in December 1993. The Valentines Ball followed on 12 February 1994, showing how quickly the promoter was establishing a regular identity at the Edmonton venue.

A contemporary advert lists Fabio, Micky Finn, Slipmatt, DJ Vibes, DJ Hype, LTJ Bukem, DJ Killer and DJ Riddler. The surviving Rave Archive UK tapes preserve Hype, Killer with DJ Rap, Fabio and Micky Finn, with MC Free & Easy heard across the recordings.

Musically, the tapes land at the point where late hardcore was hardening into jungle: chopped breakbeats, deeper bass pressure and darker production were becoming central while the rave infrastructure — flyers, MCs, tape packs and big London venues — remained rooted in hardcore culture.

DJ Hype’s surviving Valentines Ball set is almost a checklist of the breakbeat records driving the year forward: Deep Blue’s Helicopter Tune, Roni Size & DJ Die, Origin Unknown’s Valley Of The Shadows, Dextrous & Rude Boy Keith, Gappa G & Hyper Hypa, Q Project’s Champion Sound, Andy C and Potential Bad Boy.

That is why the page does not need a vague paragraph saying One Nation was “at the forefront of jungle”. The actual Roller Express tape shows what Hype was reaching for on 12 February, while the flyer and the other three RAUK recordings keep the wider event around it.
