The Living Dream at a glance

Dreamscape 22’s story runs from the cancelled April Shepton Mallet date to the memorial return at The Sanctuary in July.

From cancellation to memorial

How Dreamscape 22 became The Living Dream

The April Shepton Mallet plan and the July Sanctuary event belong to the same Dreamscape 22 story.

Dreamscape 22 changed course in 1996

The April ‘XXII Files’ / Episode 22 artwork records the event as it was originally planned for Shepton Mallet. After Murray Beetson’s death in March, Dreamscape cancelled that date. The event returned in July at The Sanctuary under the new title ‘The Living Dream’ in his memory.

Dreamscape’s own history says the April event was already scheduled, with flyers out and DJs confirmed, when Murray died. Rather than carry on immediately, the team cancelled the date so they could mourn the loss of the man who had driven Dreamscape from its early days into one of the biggest names in UK rave.

Four months later Dreamscape 22 returned at The Sanctuary on 20 July 1996. The new title — The Living Dream — turned the night into a memorial as well as a continuation. Dreamscape remembers the event as a sell-out, with whistles and horns going throughout the night as the crowd marked Murray’s absence and the survival of the organisation he had built.

The later eight-tape package preserves Clarkee, Dougal, Hype, Seduction, Slipmatt, Sy, Vibes and Brisk. Seven Rave Archive UK recordings from the night can be heard below, carrying that memorial event back into the present through the tapes themselves.
