One Dreamscape, two places at once
The dual-venue structure is the heart of The Final Countdown: Milton Keynes and Shepton Mallet were both part of Dreamscape 21.
The Sanctuary vs Shepton Mallet
Dreamscape’s own history describes this night as its first live satellite link between the two venues.
The Sanctuary
The Sanctuary remained Dreamscape’s central indoor landmark. Surviving recordings place Hype, Supreme, Kenny Ken, Swann-E and Dave Angel on the Milton Keynes side of the night.
Shepton Mallet
The West of England Exhibition Centre / Royal Bath & West Showground formed the second simultaneous site. The Roni Size w/ MC Dynamite recording is identified with the Shepton Mallet branch.
Dreamscape’s own history identifies the satellite link as a first for the organisation: two full New Year’s Eve events operating at the same time and connected live.
A major night — and a closing chapter
The Final Countdown carried extra weight in the Dreamscape story because it became Murray Beetson’s final Dreamscape event before his death in March 1996.
Dreamscape 21 was built around scale and simultaneity. The Sanctuary and Shepton Mallet each functioned as real event sites on New Year’s Eve, with the satellite connection turning them into one shared Dreamscape experience.
The surviving recordings reflect that two-site structure, moving between hardcore, jungle, drum & bass and techno across the same New Year’s Eve identity.
Dreamscape’s official story also records this as Murray Beetson’s final Dreamscape event. The Final Countdown therefore stands as both a technical high point — two venues linked live — and the end of the founder-led Dreamscape era.
Two venues, one last Murray-era Dreamscape
The organisation’s own chronology gives this night extra weight beyond the satellite-link concept.
Dreamscape’s own history remembers New Year’s Eve 1995 as The Sanctuary versus Shepton Mallet, joined by the organisation’s first live satellite link between the two venues. It was an ambitious way to turn two separate raves into one shared Dreamscape 21 experience as 1995 became 1996.
The two sites were not mirror images. Surviving running-order research for Shepton Mallet includes Bunjy, Mastervibe, Easygroove, Roni Size, Sy, Vinylgroover, LTJ Bukem and Mark EG, while the Sanctuary side includes Force & Evolution, Hixxy, Kenny Ken, Supreme, Hype, Dougal, Seduction, Swan-E, Clarkee and Dave Angel. The musical crossover was broad, but each crowd was hearing its own night.
The event also became an unintended turning point. Dreamscape’s history records it as Murray Beetson’s final event before his death in March 1996. Dreamscape would return later that year, but The Final Countdown closes the chapter in which Murray himself was still at the centre of the organisation.
