Dreamscape 1 A New Warehouse Concept

V7 Saxon Street, Denbigh Leisure Park, Milton Keynes • Friday 6 December 1991. The first Dreamscape took place before the building had the name by which rave history would later know it: The Sanctuary.
Before The Sanctuary had a name
Later histories often call the venue The Sanctuary for convenience. Dreamscape’s own history places the first event at the building before that name had been adopted.
Four thousand people heading for an address nobody knew
Dreamscape’s own later account preserves the practical detail that makes the first night feel real rather than mythical.
The Dreamscape history describes the crew guarding the site the night before, then around 4,000 ravers heading for V7 Saxon Street on Friday 6 December. It stresses that the building did not yet have the Sanctuary identity people now project backwards onto it.
The account also remembers how basic the venue was before conversion: no established bar setup and drinks being sold from a trailer. Murray Beetson’s work on licensing, fire exits and capacity is presented as part of turning an otherwise empty industrial unit into the warehouse environment Dreamscape wanted.
Because this is Dreamscape’s own retrospective account, the page labels it as promoter history rather than pretending it is a contemporary 1991 review. The absence of a recording remains part of the record too.
No tape from the first Dreamscape
Dreamscape 1 stands apart from the later numbered events because there is no recording from the night.
Dreamscape 1 was not recorded, so this page stays audio-free rather than borrowing a tape from another event.
From warehouse experiment to rave landmark
Dreamscape’s own history places this event at the moment Murray Beetson turned a largely empty industrial building into the foundation of a major rave institution.
Dreamscape’s history describes Murray Beetson finding a venue with a legal capacity of only a few hundred and investing in the changes needed to create the much larger warehouse environment he wanted. The 6 December event drew ravers to an address many had never visited before: V7 Saxon Street.
The important detail is chronological. This was before “The Sanctuary” existed as the familiar venue name. Dreamscape’s birth history says the building had no name and the flyer sold the night as “A New Warehouse Concept” at Denbigh Leisure Park. Later flyer databases understandably catalogue the location retrospectively as The Sanctuary, but the surviving 1991 identity belongs to the unnamed warehouse.
That first night established both Dreamscape and the building’s place in rave history. Dreamscape 2, in February 1992, is the next numbered chapter and the first point in this sequence where surviving audio enters the archive.
