A club night that became part of jungle’s infrastructure
AWOL launched at the Paradise Club in Islington in 1992 and became one of the places where hardcore’s breakbeat-heavy edge hardened into the jungle culture of the following years. Its importance was not just a roster of DJs: it was the repeated Saturday-night combination of selectors, MCs, dubplates, regulars and tapes that made the club a reference point far beyond the room itself.
By 1994, AWOL and Paradise were part of a specialist jungle network rather than simply one branch of the wider rave circuit. Contemporary writing later described AWOL as a gathering place for the scene’s inner circle, with DJs such as Randall pushing the music into increasingly rough-cut territory.
The four tapes preserved here are therefore more than a farewell set list. They document the end of the original Paradise era through several of the DJs and MCs most strongly associated with AWOL’s identity.
