One in the Jungle 1997

Forty-one Rave Archive UK recordings survive from the 1997 run, each still paired with its original Mediafire download. The year stretches from DJ Kid & MC Det in January to the End Of Year Special on Boxing Day, taking in studio shows, label and crew features, live recordings and a broad cross-section of the scene.

The year

Jungle and drum & bass across Radio 1

By 1997 One in the Jungle had become a broad national window onto a scene that was changing quickly. The surviving Rave Archive recordings move through Ed Rush & Trace, Dom & Roland, Kemistry & Storm, Roni Size & Krust, Ray Keith, Mampi Swift, Hype, Kenny Ken, Doc Scott and many more, with MCs remaining part of the programme identity throughout the year.

The run also shows how wide the format had become. Ruffneck Ting takes over one October programme through Kenny Ken, Dazee and Markee AKA Substance with MC Jakes; Danny Breaks & Randall appear in a live Newcastle recording; and the year closes with the BBC Radio One in the Jungle End Of Year Special on 26 December.

One surviving Mixcloud address for Bryan Gee ends in `18011996`, while the preserved programme date and matching Mediafire file identify the recording as 18 January 1997. The recording is listed here as 18 January 1997.
