One in the Jungle 1996

By 1996, One in the Jungle had moved beyond its first short run into a much broader sweep of the scene: studio sessions, live broadcasts, label-linked specials and sets recorded at Tribal Gathering all appeared through the year.

Rave Archive UK preserves 28 of those 1996 recordings. They are presented here under their original RAUK identities and in date order; the page does not pretend the surviving archive is a complete list of every programme transmitted that year.

The second year

From studio sessions to live broadcasts

The 1996 run stretches from LTJ Bukem and Peshay in April through to Jungle Blitz ’96 at the end of December. Along the way the surviving Rave Archive copies catch Kemistry & Storm, Andy C, Roni Size, DJ Rap, Brockie, 4 Hero, Spring Heel Jack and a long list of MCs who were part of the programme’s identity rather than decoration around the DJs.

The two Tribal Gathering recordings are kept under the dates used by the original Rave Archive uploads, preserving the tape trail exactly as it entered the archive.

Why it matters

A national window onto jungle in motion

The 1996 broadcasts show how broad the music already was: atmospheric drum & bass, hard-edged jungle, label showcases, live-event recordings and heavyweight MC combinations all shared the same national platform.
