The story

Universe arrives outdoors

Universe’s early history belongs to the point where the late-1980s free-party network was being forced to find new ways of operating. A surviving 1993 interview with Paul Shurey describes the group emerging from warehouse and traveller-party experience, while later rave-history timelines place the Bath event as the moment Shurey and Rob Vega staged their first legal Universe rave.

The flyer already shows one of the ideas that would define Universe later: musical breadth. Rather than presenting one narrow sound, the artwork advertises a main event alongside a dedicated Techno Tent, with names including Sasha, Rap, Eddie Richards and continental techno acts. That cross-scene ambition becomes much more explicit in the 1992 and 1993 events that follow.

No exact recording from 30 August 1991 is currently attached. The original flyer and the promoter history therefore carry the story until a confirmed tape from the date surfaces.

Why Universe went legal and bigger

A 1993 Ravescene interview with Paul Shurey gives unusually direct context for this first legal Universe chapter. Shurey described Universe as growing out of warehouse-party organising and links with the traveller convoy scene, and said that by the end of the 1980s even supposedly underground parties were drawing hundreds of people.

His explanation is useful because it tells us what the legal outdoor move was trying to solve: the crew wanted to build more ambitious productions than the illegal warehouse format would reliably allow. That later interview does not prove every detail of 30 August 1991, but it explains the promoter thinking behind the move from hidden warehouses into the large licensed Universe events that followed.

Many Universe tapes survive from 1992 onward, but none has been securely tied here to 30 August 1991. Rather than borrow a later Universe set, this page leaves the date without a player until a recording from the actual event is confirmed.
