The story

Universe crosses into South Wales

Pleasure Planet shows how quickly Universe was expanding its geography and ambition. Just seven weeks after In 2 Orbit, the promoter moved to a new outdoor site near Newport. The surviving ticket is unusually useful because it gives practical period detail rather than just branding: Friday 19 June 1992, near Newport, South Wales, Junction 23 of the M4 and “6 minutes from Severn Bridge”.

The flyer is broader again. Sasha is prominently billed, while the surrounding programme reaches through house, breakbeat, hardcore and techno. The surviving tapes back up that range: Sasha with MC Joe Peng, Judge Jules, Fabio & Grooverider and John Kelly all survive as recordings from the event.

Sasha and Judge Jules belong in the house-facing part of the Universe story here, while Fabio & Grooverider document the breakbeat/hardcore route that would feed directly into jungle. John Kelly sits in the same 1992 cross-scene moment rather than being flattened into one modern genre label.

Deep dive • one rave, several musical directions

Sasha’s tape shows how wide Universe was

Sasha’s surviving Pleasure Planet set moves through Todd Terry, Meli’sa Morgan, Lil’ Louis, Leftfield, Degrees Of Motion, Brothers Love Dubs and other house-facing material. On the very same event page, Fabio & Grooverider preserve another route through the night.

That contrast is more historically useful than forcing Pleasure Planet into a single genre box. Universe was still programming different branches of dance culture together, and the tapes let us hear those branches separately while the ticket fixes the practical geography: near Newport, Junction 23 of the M4, six minutes from the Severn Bridge.
