Telepathy Step Beyond
Six tapes from one Telepathy night, and this is exactly why Telepathy mattered: big DJs, bigger MC combinations and that proper London jungle energy where the mic was every bit as important as the decks.
This was never just one DJ at a time
Telepathy nights were about combinations. DJs changed, MCs moved between sets, crews bounced off each other and the room built its own momentum.
By 1996, Telepathy had that unmistakable London jungle feel where the MCs were not standing politely at the side waiting for a gap. Skibadee, Shabba, Det, Navigator, Yankee and Bassman are all over these tapes, swapping lines, lifting the room and changing the feel of a set as much as the tunes did.
The surviving recordings are serious too: Andy C B2B DJ SS, Grooverider, Funky Flirt, Micky Finn, Brockie B2B SL and Mampi Swift. That is a proper mid-90s jungle line-up, but what makes the tapes come alive is hearing those DJs with the MC combinations that belonged to the night.
The Mampi Swift tape had already been sitting on the Rave Archive Mixcloud account but had somehow never made it back onto this event page. That gap is now fixed, so the six surviving recordings from Step Beyond are back together where they belong.
The tapes sound like Telepathy
You can hear the promoter identity in the combinations themselves.
Andy C and SS with Skibadee, Shabba and Det is one flavour. Grooverider with Det, Navigator, Skibadee, Shabba and Yankee is another. Then Funky Flirt, Micky Finn, Brockie and SL all get their own MC chemistry.
That is the point of keeping the voices in the titles. If you reduce these tapes to DJ names, you lose half the atmosphere. Jungle nights like this were built on the conversation between decks, mic and crowd.
Step Beyond is a good example of why Telepathy belongs in the promoter history alongside the recordings themselves. You could recognise the night not only by who was booked, but by how the room sounded once all those people were working together.
