Fantazia Takes You Into 1992

Westpoint Exhibition Centre, Exeter • Tuesday 31 December 1991 into New Year’s Day 1992. Fantazia closed its first year with a purpose-built indoor all-nighter that helped establish Westpoint as one of the South West’s major rave sites. Rave Archive UK preserves a Top Buzz recording from the night.
Fantazia finds Westpoint
Fantazia had formed in 1991 and quickly moved from club nights into the kind of large licensed events that defined the next phase of UK rave. Westpoint offered something promoters had spent the previous few years chasing: indoor scale, overnight licensing and enough infrastructure to build a huge production without relying on a secret warehouse or field location.
The New Year’s Eve artwork is pure Fantazia confidence: futuristic imagery, twelve hours of music and a promise of a fully licensed indoor event. Surviving listings and tapes place Carl Cox, Sy, Easygroove, Ellis Dee, Ratty, Slipmatt and Top Buzz around the night. Those surviving names show the breadth of the event, while the tape-pack sequence remains separate from the live timetable.
Top Buzz give this page its direct audio link to the night. The Rave Archive UK transfer is labelled Fantazia, Westpoint Exhibition Centre, Exeter, 31.12.91 — the same event carried on the artwork.
The tape shows what midnight sounded like
The surviving Top Buzz recording is unusually useful because a near-complete track reconstruction exists. New Atlantic, 2 Bad Mice, DJ Seduction, Blame, Nebula II, Hackney Hardcore, Mental Overdrive and DJ SS all appear as the set moves between breakbeat, rave and harder techno pressure.
Separate tape inventories preserve far more of the Westpoint night than one famous set: Ellis Dee, Slipmatt, Donovan Bassline Smith / Ratty, Sy, Lomas and Easygroove / Lisa are among the surviving recordings catalogued from Fantazia’s New Year event. The page therefore treats Top Buzz as a doorway into a much bigger recorded night, not the whole rave.

A licensed rave at serious scale
Fantazia’s Westpoint events show the scene learning how to operate at arena scale without losing the all-night rave format. The promoter returned to Westpoint in February 1992 for Second Sight before moving into even larger outdoor spectacles at Matchams and Castle Donington later that year.
