Wolstenholme Square, Liverpool • Saturday 17 October 1992. Cream began as a weekly house night at Nation and grew into one of the defining British superclub brands of the 1990s. The Liverpool weekly came first; the national superclub reputation and Creamfields followed.

The story

From Liverpool club night to superclub institution

Creamfields’ official history traces the festival back to Cream’s weekly house night at Nation in Wolstenholme Square, where it ran from October 1992 until June 2002. A retrospective interview with Cream’s PR head Gill Nightingale gives the opening date as Saturday 17 October 1992 and recalls only 424 people coming through the doors that first night.

That modest start matters. Cream’s later reputation can make the story look inevitable, but the sequence is more interesting when kept straight: first came the Liverpool weekly, then the national superclub reputation, then the large outdoor festival extension. Nation therefore belongs here as an origin point, not as a footnote underneath Creamfields.

As the club grew, Cream became associated with major house, trance and progressive names from Britain and abroad. Those artists belong to the years in which they were actually part of the Nation story, rather than being pulled backwards into the 1992 opening night.

Inside account • the first Saturday

Before the superclub, 424 people

Cream’s later scale makes its beginning easy to rewrite as destiny. Gill Nightingale’s inside account is much more useful: she dates the first Cream at Nation to Saturday 17 October 1992 and remembers just 424 people coming through the doors. The same account says the weekly eventually grew to more than 3,000 people.

The official Creamfields history independently keeps the chronology straight: Cream began as a weekly house night at Nation in Wolstenholme Square in October 1992 and ran there until June 2002. There is still no exact opening-night recording attached here, so the page does not borrow a later Nation tape and pretend it is the sound of 17 October.

Nation is part of the history

Nation was the physical home that gave Cream its weekly identity. The building in Wolstenholme Square was later demolished, leaving flyers, photographs and recorded sets as part of the surviving record of the place.
