One Nation Under A Groove

Roller Express, Edmonton • Saturday 11 December 1993. Terry Stone has identified this December 1993 Roller Express night as his first One Nation rave, giving the event a much bigger historical role than the old tape-pack presentation suggested.
The story
The start of One Nation
One Nation’s first Roller Express event arrived at a crucial point in late 1993, when dark hardcore, breakbeat and the emerging jungle identity were pulling the scene into a more specialist London sound. The surviving archive tapes reflect that crossover clearly: Ray Keith, LTJ Bukem, Ellis Dee, Vibes and Swann-e all survive as Rave Archive UK recordings from the night.
Later tape-pack volume sequences are useful for understanding the collection, but they are not the same thing as the historical event. Here the event comes first and the surviving recordings sit underneath it.
Junior Tomlin’s flyer work is part of that early identity too, with independent flyer cataloguing crediting him on Under A Groove.
Deep dive • One Nation begins
Under A Groove already had the jungle future in it
LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad’s exact-event tape moves through Gwange, The Invisible Man, Roni Size, Q Project, Foul Play and Bukem’s own unreleased and early material. It is an unusually clear snapshot of what one corner of the Roller Express sounded like on One Nation’s launch night.
Later commercial tape catalogues preserve a different subset of the event — including DJ Seduction, Ellis Dee, Ray Keith and Swan-E — which is useful precisely because it shows how incomplete any single surviving pack can be. Rave Archive UK’s five playable recordings are therefore holdings from the night, not an “official complete pack” reconstructed after the fact.
