Helter Skelter The Sanctuary

Milton Keynes • Friday 17 September 1993. This early Sanctuary-era Helter Skelter sits at a key point in the transition from hardcore into darker breakbeat and jungle. The original flyer is credited to Pez, while six Rave Archive UK recordings preserve a substantial part of the night.
The story
Helter Skelter at V7 Saxon Street
The Sanctuary became one of the defining legal rave venues of the 1990s, a former warehouse on V7 Saxon Street that hosted promoters across hardcore, jungle and drum & bass. By September 1993, Helter Skelter was already using the venue during a period when the music was becoming tougher, darker and more rhythmically complex.
The six Rave Archive UK survivors — Swann-e, Slipmatt, Ratty, DJ Rap with MCMC, Music Maker and Jumpin Jack Frost with MCMC — capture different parts of that crossover. Wider tape records also preserve sets associated with Randall, Pilgrim, Grooverider, DJ SS and Seduction.
Those wider tapes matter, but a collector pack sequence is not the same thing as the timetable on the night. The flyer, venue and event identity lead the story, with the surviving recordings underneath as the sound that remains.
Deep dive • Helter Skelter in September ’93
One Sanctuary night, several musical directions
DJ SS’s surviving set runs through DJ Trace, DJ Crystl, Noise Factory, Top Buzz, Nookie, Omni Trio, Red Alert & Mike Slammer and other breakbeat material that was pushing toward jungle. Pilgrim’s recording follows another hardcore route, while The Music Maker’s exact-event set reaches into Polygon Window, CJ Bolland, Moby and harder techno.
That spread matters more than trying to give the whole event one tidy genre badge. The surviving tapes show Helter Skelter using The Sanctuary as a meeting point for sounds that were becoming increasingly distinct by late 1993.
