MICKY FINN

Biography

From breakbeat to Urban Takeover

Micky Finn emerged from the late-1980s rave period and became one of the selectors who remained visible as the music accelerated from acid house and breakbeat into hardcore and jungle. Early production work including Some Justice became part of the vocabulary of the transition, while his DJ bookings placed him inside many of the parties where that shift was happening in public.

By the early-to-mid 1990s, Micky Finn was a fixture across AWOL, Jungle Fever, World Dance, Dreamscape, One Nation and the wider tape-pack circuit. The archive is especially useful here because his name does not belong to one promoter or one phase: it keeps reappearing as the music changes around him.

Production partnerships became another major strand. Work with Aphrodite fed into Urban Shakedown and later the Urban Takeover label, whose records helped define the more playful, bass-heavy jump-up side of jungle and drum & bass. That sound would be referenced by later generations long after the original records left the pressing plant.

The Rave Archive trail catches both sides of the career. AWOL and World Dance show Micky Finn inside classic 1994 jungle; Jungle Fever captures the following year as the sound hardens and expands; Telepathy in 1998 shows the continuity into later drum & bass. The story is not simply that he “was there” — it is that he remained part of the working circuit across its biggest stylistic turns.
