Creamfields 1999 Liverpool Airfield

Creamfields’ official history describes 1999 as the year the festival moved to the old Liverpool Airfield, placing the outdoor event much closer to its parent night at Nation. The move was not just symbolic: the retrospective says the site “boasted double the capacity” in response to demand after Winchester. Contemporary NME reporting in April, however, described the licensed event as 40,000-capacity. Because those two period/retrospective descriptions do not give the same neat figure, Rave Archive keeps both rather than converting the official wording into an unsupported exact attendance.

The surviving 1999 advert shows a much broader festival identity than a single club tent. Pet Shop Boys and Basement Jaxx sit alongside house and trance names, while dedicated areas carry specialist strands of the scene. By 1999 Creamfields was no longer simply “Cream outdoors”, but a festival structure capable of absorbing multiple commercial and underground dance currents at once.

Surviving recordings make the date distinction especially clear. Judge Jules and Sasha are indexed on 28 August, while the main BBC Essential Mix is dated 29 August because the Saturday event ran through to 6am Sunday. That 29 August programme survives as a 4:38:58 broadcast featuring Pete Tong, Seb Fontaine and Paul Oakenfold. These are different timestamps around one overnight Creamfields event, not evidence of a two-day festival.

The old Liverpool Airfield gave Creamfields the room to scale up while reconnecting the festival geographically with Liverpool. Contemporary and retrospective material commonly identifies the site as Speke or Old Liverpool Airfield, two names for the same festival location in this history.
