When the superclub went outdoors

Creamfields’ official history dates the first festival to Saturday 2 May 1998 at the Matterley Estate in Winchester and describes a 25,000-strong debut crowd. The move mattered because Cream was no longer simply exporting a club lineup into a field: it was building a multi-stage dance festival around the scale, branding and musical breadth that superclubs had developed through the 1990s.

The original advert shows nine arenas, with dance music sitting alongside live acts and alternative programming. Official Creamfields history highlights Sasha, Paul van Dyk, Daft Punk and Tony De Vit; the wider surviving advert also documents names across house, trance, techno, drum & bass, big beat and live music. That spread is the billed festival structure, not a reconstructed performance timetable.

A later industry retrospective on the festival’s production history credits Cream with booking and marketing while Mean Fiddler handled production and promotion. It also places the event in the gap left when Tribal Gathering did not run in 1998, helping explain why Creamfields arrived at exactly this point in British dance-festival history.

Matterley before Homelands

The Matterley Bowl became a recurring dance-festival landscape after Creamfields’ first edition. The venue’s own historical event list records Creamfields on 2–3 May 1998 before Homelands occupied the site in subsequent years. That makes the first Creamfields part of the wider evolution of Britain’s late-1990s outdoor dance circuit.
