The July–August 1992 Renaissance flyer lists Saturday 1 August with Roger Sanchez, Glenn Gunner and Breeze, plus residents Sasha, Ian Ossia and Buckley.

Mansfield • Saturday 1 August 1992. Only a few months after Renaissance opened at Venue 44, the club was already establishing the musical identity that would define its early years: international house guests, Sasha as resident, and a carefully programmed Saturday-night format rather than the sprawling multi-arena rave model.

The story

A different branch of rave culture

Renaissance had launched at Venue 44 in March 1992. Its importance was not that it copied the giant rave format, but that it helped establish another direction for British dance culture: a focused club night built around resident identity, extended house sets and carefully chosen guests.

The flyer for 1 August captures that early formula cleanly. Roger Sanchez, Glenn Gunner and Breeze are the guests, while Sasha, Ian Ossia and Buckley are the residents. Sasha’s presence on the surviving recording fits that resident role rather than requiring him to appear in the guest line.

By this point Sasha’s move away from the hardcore-rave circuit and into progressive house was becoming central to the Renaissance story. Venue 44 gave that transition a regular home. What followed would eventually become a global club brand, but the roots here are still very local and very specific: Mansfield, one Saturday, one room, one developing sound.

Renaissance was designed not to feel like a rave

Geoff Oakes later explained that Venue 44 appealed because it had an all-night licence, sat away from the inner-city problems affecting other clubs and required people to make a deliberate journey to Mansfield. He also describes asking Sasha to become a resident and imposing a selective door policy aimed at building the crowd he wanted.

Just as important, Oakes says the name, artwork, décor and music were meant to work as one coherent message. That gives the 1 August flyer more meaning: Roger Sanchez, Glenn Gunner and Breeze were entering a club already trying to build identity through residents, visuals and atmosphere rather than through the mass-rave formula alone.
