Kool FM 3rd Birthday Party

Astoria, London • Saturday 26 November 1994. Kool took the station out of the studio and into a packed Astoria for its third birthday — six recordings survive here with the DJ/MC combinations preserved.

Six tapes from the Astoria

Mampi Swift & Younghead, Ron & SL, Footloose & Brockie, Trace & Tonic, Phaze III & Kane, and Rodney T & Pressure X make up the surviving tapes. It reads like a Kool FM roster because that is basically what the birthday was — the station’s sound lifted off the dial and put into the Astoria.

And again, the MCs are half the story. Moose, Five-O, the Ragga Twins, Navigator, Det, Remadee, Rhyme Tyme, Times 2 and Foxy are all over the tapes. Strip those names out and you strip out what made Kool sound like Kool.

The surviving artwork gives the page a direct visual link to the Kool FM birthday archive alongside the six recordings.

A pirate station birthday turned the Astoria into a roadblock

Atmosphere’s December 1994 issue gives us the bit the tapes cannot show: what it felt like in the room. The Astoria was looking the part, the DJs and MCs were on form, the lasers and sound were doing their job, and the crowd wanted fresh dubplates. That is the human side behind the six recordings below.

The same issue prints a Kool FM 94.5 playlist full of the same names that were actually working the station — Brockie & Det, Footloose, Pressure X, Rodney T, Tonic & Rema-D, Younghead & Flinty Badman and others. Navigator later remembered the third birthday as an Astoria “road block”. That sounds a lot more like how people remember a proper rave than a dry attendance figure ever could.
