A pioneer of the progressive journey
Sasha emerged as one of the standout DJs of the early 1990s British club scene, building a reputation for sets that blended house, breakbeat, trance and emerging progressive sounds into long, carefully structured journeys. His residencies and appearances at clubs such as Shelley’s and Renaissance helped establish a new model of the DJ as a headline artist rather than simply part of a club’s background.
His partnership with John Digweed became one of the most influential DJ pairings of the era. Their Renaissance and Northern Exposure mix projects helped define progressive house for an international audience and demonstrated how a recorded DJ mix could work as a coherent artistic statement.
Sasha also developed a substantial solo career as a producer and remixer, later founding Last Night On Earth. His place in dance-music history rests on the way he helped shape progressive house, elevated the craft of long-form mixing and carried that approach from British club rooms to major venues and festivals around the world.

Sasha's influence was not only what happened in clubs; it helped change how a DJ set could be documented, sold and remembered.
Renaissance gave Sasha and John Digweed a setting in which the slower architecture of a progressive set could become the attraction in its own right. In October 1994 Renaissance: The Mix Collection translated that approach into a three-CD release and became the first UK mix compilation to achieve gold status. The significance was cultural as much as commercial: the mix album could now be treated as a coherent authored journey rather than a disposable collection of current tracks.
The partnership with Digweed carried that idea through the Northern Exposure series and the later Twilo residency, where extended sets made patience and progression central to the experience. This was a different route out of rave than the hardcore-to-jungle lineage, but it came from the same early-1990s culture of DJs learning how far a room would follow them.
Sasha's later work through Last Night On Earth and live projects such as Refracted broadened the format again, moving between label curation, studio composition and performance while keeping the long musical arc at the centre.
