Wildale Spencer, better known as MC Fats or Singing Fats, brought a different kind of presence to the drum & bass microphone. His background in soul, rare groove and reggae gave him a style that could move between hosting, toasting and full melodic singing without treating those things as separate jobs.

From the early 1990s onward Fats became one of the scene’s most trusted vocal partners. His voice appeared beside DJs across the spectrum and on records by artists including DJ Hype, Calibre, A-Sides, Dillinja, Break and many more. Tracks such as Peace, Love & Unity and Drop It Down made the same point as the live sets: he could add warmth and musicality without crowding the tune.

That versatility made Fats a natural fit for everything from jump-up and dancefloor sets to Metalheadz and deeper drum & bass. He also became closely associated with Fabric, while his recording career eventually led to the album We Gotcha and his own U Understand Me Music imprint.

Fats died in March 2023. Tributes repeatedly described him not just as an MC but as an original vocalist whose contribution sat inside the music itself. Rave Archive UK preserves that relationship across rave tapes, BBC radio, Innovation and later Metalheadz/Renegade Hardware recordings.
