Mark EG began DJing in the mid-1980s, moving through electro, Chicago house, Detroit techno and acid house before the tougher Belgian techno and trance records of the early 1990s became central to his sound. That progression gave him an unusually broad musical base even as he became known publicly for harder styles.

During the rave era he became a regular at promoters including Dreamscape, Helter Skelter and Fantazia. In large hardcore and techno rooms his performances stood out not only for fast, aggressive programming but for an anarchic stage presence that could involve broken equipment, ladders, props and spontaneous chaos.

The spectacle never replaced the music. Mark built a parallel career in journalism and the record industry, including editorial work for Eternity and Wax magazines, reviewing for Mixmag’s US edition, PR work for GPR Records and A&R for Bonzai. Those roles placed him inside the circulation of new electronic music as listener, critic, promoter and DJ at the same time.

As a producer he released music under several names and projects, including The Anxious, while Blackout Audio became one of his most enduring label ventures. His musical path continued through hard techno, hardstyle, schranz and darker techno without abandoning the stylistic curiosity of his early years.

Mark EG’s historical role is therefore wider than the famous stage antics suggest. He represents a strand of British rave history in which techno and hard trance were integral to the same event culture as hardcore and jungle, while his writing, label work and production helped connect the UK scene with harder European electronic music.
