DJ Rap belongs to the generation that helped turn the raw ingredients of late-1980s and early-1990s UK dance music into hardcore, jungle and drum & bass. Her early history is unusually valuable to an archive because it reaches back into pirate radio as well as the rave circuit: Rave Archive UK preserves a DJ Rap recording from Fantasy FM in London in 1990, before jungle had settled into a fixed identity.

As the breakbeat sound developed, Rap became a major presence on rave line-ups and also built a parallel career as a producer. Records including “Spiritual Aura” became closely associated with her name, while her technical interest went beyond DJing into engineering and production. She established Propa Talent, giving her a platform to release music independently and develop her own catalogue.

That combination — DJ, producer, engineer, artist and label founder — made her career wider than the conventional “female DJ” framing often applied to women in the scene. Her 1990s work moved from hardcore and jungle into major-label electronic music; Sony’s Higher Ground released Learning Curve in 1999. She later based herself in the United States while continuing to tour, produce and maintain the Propa identity.

For Rave Archive UK, the important thing is that the career can be heard changing in real time. The surviving tapes move from Fantasy FM through Dance Planet, Elevation, Quest, Desire and Dreamscape — a route through the same venues, promoters and MC partnerships that carried jungle from an underground mutation into a global sound.
