Chickaboo emerged from Birmingham’s early-1990s rave scene and became widely recognised as the first woman to establish herself as a jungle MC. Her early partnership with G.E. Real put her onto major rave line-ups while the music was still mutating from hardcore into jungle.

That position mattered because the MC booth was overwhelmingly male. Chickaboo developed an energetic, fast, improvised style strong enough to stand alongside established DJs and MCs without being treated as a novelty. Rave Archive UK preserves an early example from Helter Skelter at The Sanctuary in December 1993, placing her voice inside the exact period when jungle was taking shape.

Her career later widened beyond jungle. Work across breaks, house and electronic music brought collaborations with major producers and chart success, while appearances with Soul II Soul and other projects showed how naturally her voice could move between genres without losing its soundsystem character.

In more recent years Chickaboo has become an important link between jungle’s history and its future, appearing with Rupture and working through EQ50 to improve representation and mentor newer artists. The thread through all of it is the same: presence, improvisation and refusing to accept that the microphone belonged to somebody else.
