Juan Atkins grew up in the Detroit area and met Derrick May and Kevin Saunderson at Belleville High School. Atkins and May began DJing together as Deep Space, absorbing European electronic music, funk, electro and the adventurous radio programming that was shaping a generation of young Detroit listeners.

In 1980 Atkins formed Cybotron with Rick Davis. The project joined machine rhythm, futurist imagery and Detroit’s industrial atmosphere in records such as Alleys of Your Mind, Cosmic Cars and especially Clear. These recordings arrived before Detroit techno was recognised as a distinct movement, but much of its vocabulary was already present.

After Cybotron, Atkins launched Model 500 and founded Metroplex. The 1985 Model 500 single No UFO’s became one of the defining first-wave Detroit records: sparse, synthetic, funky and built for the future. Metroplex provided a home not only for Atkins but for the wider network of producers developing around him.

The connection to Britain became decisive in the late 1980s. Detroit records were being championed by UK DJs and labels just as acid house and warehouse culture accelerated. The term techno gained international weight through the British compilation Techno! The New Dance Sound of Detroit, placing Atkins and his Detroit peers inside the emerging European rave story.

Atkins has continued performing and recording under names including Model 500 and Infiniti. His importance lies not in a single anthem but in the architecture of the music itself: independent labels, electronic futurism, machine funk and a distinctly Black Detroit vision of what dance music could become.
