Grooverider began DJing before jungle existed as a genre. His roots stretch through soul, funk, hip hop, electro and early house, with pirate-radio experience on Faze 1 helping develop the selector mentality that would remain central to his reputation.

His partnership with Fabio became one of the great continuities in UK dance music. The pair’s most important early platform was Rage at Heaven, where the sound moved through house, techno, breakbeat hardcore and the darker, faster music that would be called jungle. The Rave Archive timeline itself records Fabio and Grooverider opening Rage in October 1988; later generations of artists repeatedly described the club as a school for the emerging scene.

As jungle matured, Grooverider also moved into production and label ownership. Under aliases including Codename John he released music through his own Prototype Records, a label associated with forward-looking, technical drum & bass and releases by artists including Dillinja, Ed Rush, Optical, Matrix and Boymerang. The Prototype Years captured that label aesthetic, while the 1998 album Mysteries of Funk, made with Optical and released through Sony’s Higher Ground, expanded his production identity.

Radio widened the reach even further. Fabio and Grooverider broadcast together on Kiss before moving to BBC Radio 1, where their long-running programme brought underground drum & bass to a national audience. But the archive evidence still comes back to the dancefloor: Roast, Vision, Helter Skelter, Telepathy, World Dance, One Nation and countless other recordings show why Grooverider’s first identity has always been selector.
