Randall McNeil was a selector’s selector: an East London DJ whose precision, imagination and record knowledge helped carry breakbeat hardcore into jungle and drum & bass. Across pirate radio, AWOL, Metalheadz and decades of rave culture, his sets became a lesson in how records could be made to speak to each other.

Randall’s reputation was built first and foremost behind the decks. The archive underneath this biography shows that reputation across more than three decades.
Randall McNeil came out of East London’s late-1980s underground at exactly the point when acid house, warehouse parties, pirate radio and breakbeat were beginning to mutate into something new. After encountering acid house at Notting Hill Carnival in 1987, he began buying records, learning to mix and playing warehouse parties. By 1989 he was appearing on Centreforce, and his rise through pirate radio and the rave circuit soon placed him among the selectors who would shape the transition from hardcore into jungle.
A major early breakthrough came through the Living Dream rave at Leyton’s Eastway Speed Stadium in 1990. Randall was already booked, but a no-show gave him an extended set in front of a huge crowd. His reputation accelerated from there: Orange at the Rocket, AWOL at the Paradise Club, and later Metalheadz became crucial settings for a style built around deep selection, fearless switches and technically exact mixing.
In 1991 Randall helped establish De Underground in Forest Gate with Cool Hand Flex, Mike De Underground and Uncle 22. The shop and label became part of the infrastructure of East London’s developing hardcore and jungle scene: a place where records, producers, DJs and ideas crossed paths. When De Underground closed in 1996, Randall and Cool Hand Flex continued that lineage through Mac II Recordings, a label that remained committed to new music and new producers rather than simply trading on nostalgia.
Randall was primarily celebrated as a DJ, but his production history contains one of jungle’s defining collaborations. Working with the then-emerging Andy C, he co-produced “Sound Control”, an early RAM Records landmark. Andy C would repeatedly describe Randall as a mentor and a profound influence on his own approach to mixing — particularly the way Randall could create unexpected moments between records rather than simply move from one tune to the next.
That influence lasted far beyond the 1990s. Randall remained active across clubs, festivals and drum & bass culture for the rest of his life, while newer generations continued to study the same qualities that had made his tapes essential listening: patience, musical memory, technical control and an ability to choose the tune nobody else would have reached for at that exact moment. He died on 31 July 2024, aged 54.
